The Evolution of Construction Techniques

Did you know that the precursor to modern concrete was invented in 1300 BC? Middle Eastern construction builders found that when they coated the surfaces of a building with burned limestone, it reacted with the chemicals in the air to form a protective surface. While this wasn’t concrete in itself, it did lead to the development of cement.

Construction technology is constantly improving, and as a result, so are construction techniques.

If you’ve ever wanted to know more about construction, now’s your chance. Read on, and we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the various types of construction techniques.

Construction Technology

Although the history of construction can be dated back to Ancient Mesopotamia, construction as a profession truly began to be recognized during the Industrial Revolution.

Scientific breakthroughs, combined with the technological advances at the time, allowed people in construction to experiment with methods and materials they hadn’t had access to before.

For example, a new method of iron smelting allowed for the mass production of cast iron, which led to iron structures like bridges and eventually the railroad.

When it came to buildings, mass-produced brick became a common material. It was cheaper than stone and easier to handle. Even today, people prefer brick to stone for many reasons.

As brick requires mortar, this led to experiments with that material that helped to push construction into what we know now.

Construction Techniques

Today, there are many different methods of new building construction.

One method is 3-D construction. Units are produced in controlled factory settings and shipped to the construction site for the final touches. They can be put together quickly and retain properties of concrete like sound resistance.

Similar to 3-D construction, precast foundations are a good example of modern construction. All of the things needed for the foundation are constructed off-site and shipped to the site to be assembled. This is best suited for extreme weather conditions or highly contaminated ground. Another method is AR-assisted building. Using virtual reality, people in construction can better plan a structure out down to which materials are used. This also helps with strategies such as zoning laws.

Lastly, a popular method of creating buildings is tilt up construction. Over 650 million square feet of buildings have been made using this method of construction.

Tilt up construction uses concrete to cast things like walls or floors on a flat surface. Once the cast is done, everything is cut to size. Finally, a crane “tilts it” into a standing position.
