Belarus vs Belgium: Preview

So far, Belarus has had a dismal qualifying season, with only one win in four matches. The Belarus side were unfortunate to suffer a 2-3 defeat against Wales in the last match. Georgi Kondratiev’s side have also lost their previous three Group E games. However, Belarus got things underway with a 4-2 win over Estonia and the Belarusians performed well against the Czech Republic but were defeated by a close 0-1 score. The White Wings have never been picked for major international competitions in their history. Belarus also possesses one of the weakest defences in the group, with no clean sheets in their previous seven games and 14 goals allowed in four qualifying matches. They are currently placed in the 4th position with 3 points.

Meanwhile, Belgium, the world’s top-ranked side, is still undefeated in its FIFA World Cup 2022 qualification campaign, winning four and drawing one of five games while scoring 20 goals. Roberto Martinez’s side provided an easy win to cruise to a 3-0 win in the previous match, with Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, and Alexis Saelemaekers all contributing to the world’s top-ranked nation’s third consecutive World Cup qualifying triumph. In their previous meeting with Belarus, the Red Devils cruised to a massive victory, scoring eight goals and conceding none. They remain undefeated as they won the first match against Wales 3-1, drew their next game against Czech Republic and later beat Estonia by 5-2. Belgium has now gone 25 games undefeated in World Cup qualification, with their last defeat coming in 2009, and they are now atop the standings.

Final Words

Belgium heads into its rematch against Belarus in great form, too. The team snagged victories in its two matches over this past week against Estonia (5-2) and the Czech Republic (3-0), putting it in prime position to lock up a spot in Qatar relatively soon.

There’s no question this will be a one-sided affair between Belgium and Belarus, one that will probably feature Belgium playing a lot of reserves big minutes, but it will be interesting to see if Belarus can at least keep things close for a half.
