What Are The Different Types Of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacements for tooth roots. They are usually made out of titanium and provide a solid foundation for removable or fixed teeth.

If the dentist in Adelaide has suggested you take dental implants, it can be exciting and challenging to choose which is the best match for you. Below we will be discussing the types of implants available.

Types Of Dental Implants

  • Endosteal implants: It is the most widespread type of implant. They are ideal for patients who need a good, healthy jaw bone. They are an alternative to a bridge or removable denture. They include screw types, cylinder types, or bladed types that are put into the jaw, and the false teeth are fitted.

Your prosthodontist would suggest the type you need, and endosteal implants are the safest and most effective options. After the process, it requires time to fuse and form a stronghold. Once healed, the false teeth can be placed on them. They are known for giving a natural feel and a stable result.

  • Subperiosteal Implants: It is an alternative to endosteal implants. These implants sit on the bone but are still under the gum. Earlier, they were used to hold dentures in place of patients with insufficient gum height. A metallic frame with posts attached is put under the gums, and with time the gum heals to keep the frame in place.

The false teeth are then placed on the posts that come from the gun. It is usually done on patients who do not have enough jawbone for an implant to be placed, and the patient does not want to go through surgery to add a bone over there. These implants do not have as much stability as the endosteal implant. This is because it does not go into the jawbone but rests in one and is held in place by a small tissue.

  • Zygomatic implants:  It is the least common implant out of all the available options. It is a highly complex procedure; the implant is placed on the patient’s cheekbone instead of the jaw bone. This is done only when the patient does not have enough jaw bone for an endosteal implant.

There are alternatives to dental implants that you should know because not everyone’s jawbones meet the specifications required for implants.

In that case, the following are some alternative options –

  1. Bone augmentation- Your dentist would restore or regenerate the jaw when it cannot support implants.
  2. Sinus Lift- It is also known to be sinus elevation or augmentation. It involves adding a bone beneath the sinus if the bone there has deteriorated due to the upper back teeth missing.
  3. Ridge Expansion- Sometimes, the patient’s jaws are not wide enough to support implants. In such cases, dentists graft bone material that would be added to a smaller ridge created along the upper jaw.

Conclusion!
