Memes Have Taken Over Social Media – The Reasons Behind the Popularity

As social media continues to explode in popularity, memes have silently become the new hot trend on sites like Facebook and Twitter. Even though it may seem like this new obsession is just teens trying out something new, or people with nothing better to do than sit around thinking up jokes all day, memes actually serve a valuable purpose for many users. What’s even more interesting about this recent fad is that most people don’t really know what memes are; they’re not entirely sure why all of their friends suddenly started sharing them on their newsfeeds, and yet they can’t stop clicking ‘Like’ on each one shared. A meme is basically any photo that has been given an amusing caption or title by someone who finds it comical. The term ‘meme’ was actually coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene. He defined memes as “an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.”

Nowadays, creating your own meme has become very simple using the countless images available on sites like Meme Generator and Quick Meme. By going to these websites, you can pick a picture and add your own caption. Once you’re done customizing it how you see fit, all you have to do is share the finished product online!

The number of memes floating around online continues to grow each day exponentially, so figuring out which ones are worth sharing with your friends is becoming more and more difficult. Luckily, there are plenty of sites out there endeavoring to help you sort through the clutter.

Memes continue to be one of the most popular ways people use social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. They can allow you to easily convey your feelings on something without having to type anything out or find an image specifically designed for what you were going for. It’s pretty ironic how so many folks complain about the amount of time they spend on social media sites, yet they can’t seem to put their phones down long enough to stop checking them!  Get in touch with Meme Scout for more information.

One could argue that memes are so popular because they’re simple and easy to digest. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with this sentiment. A rather large portion of the population believes meme creators should be awarded royalties for everything their creations earn in ad revenue. Others believe it should be considered copyright infringement. As always, when there’s this much controversy surrounding something, no one will know for sure what does or doesn’t constitute theft until the court system rules it.

As you can see, memes have taken social media in more ways than one. They’re a great way to communicate with friends, and they give folks a chance to show off a little. The only real downside is that some memes become so popular that it’s easy for your friends to get tired of seeing them all the time.
