An Insightful Conversation With A Vegan Leather Enthusiast

Many people are entering the vegan leather market, but we are sure you have never heard of Asif Ali Gohar. He is using rice as a substitute for vegan leather, and he plans on transforming this industry. Here is what you must know about his journey.

1. Please State Your Name, Age, And Place Of Birth.

My name is Asif Ali Gohar. I am thirty years old, and I was born in Karachi, Pakistan.

2. What Was Your Reason For Becoming A Vegan?

I turned vegan at an early age when I was only fifteen years old. Three years before that time, we had just moved to Germany, and it was a complete culture shock to me. However, it also taught me to become more sensitive towards other beings.

That is when I started realizing that animals also feel pain, and killing them for sustenance is equal to murder. Ever since then, I have never looked back as I don’t eat meat or such products.

3. How Did You Begin Using Rice For Vegan Leather?

I was doing my bachelor’s from the University of Hamburg, and during this time, I began experimenting with various vegan alternatives to leather. Rice also caught my eye, and I began experimenting with it as it was easily affordable and accessible. However, finding something that turns rice into a leather slime was not easy.

After many trials and errors, I finally found something that worked. I used acetic acid bacteria and yeast to create rice as a vegan substitute for leather. Finally, I had a formula that worked, and it has now become my passion.

4. Why Do You Use Rice?

Rice is important to me because it was a major part of my childhood. In addition, it helps me understand my hometown better as Pakistan is one of the top rice exporters. Our rice quality is also excellent, and many people in my country have knowledge about this staple item.

We are always finding a way to connect with ourselves, and my way is using rice as a vegan substitute for leather. So, that is my reason.

5. Do You Have A Business Plan?

Yes, I have a business plan, but I can’t create the business yet. That is because I don’t have investors or the resources and money to execute this project. Creating such items requires a lot of things, and I have limited resources.

That is why my primary aim right now is to look for investors and knowledgeable people that can help me in my journey. Even a small contribution can go a long way.
