Sunscreen: Things to Look for, Types and More

Sunscreen is essential for protecting your face from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Exposure to these rays can lead to premature appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots. But with multiple options in the market, how can one choose the best facial sunscreen? This blog post covers everything one needs to know to pick the right sunscreen to safeguard their skin.

What to look for in a facial sunscreen

Here are the top factors one should consider while selecting a facial sunscreen:

  • Broad-spectrum protection: Try choosing a sunscreen labelled “broad spectrum.” A broad-spectrum sunscreen shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
  • SPF 30 or higher: Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor ( SPF) of at least 30, which blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. Higher SPFs beyond 50 offer little more protection.
  • Water resistance: If you expect to sweat or swim, try a water-resistant sunscreen. These sunscreens can maintain considerable in-water protection.
  • Non-comedogenic and oil-free: Avoid thick and greasy sunscreens that clog pores and can trigger potential breakouts. Look for oil-free and non-comedogenic formulas suitable for acne-prone skin.
  • Antioxidant ingredients: Antioxidants like vitamins C and E provide extra skin benefits by neutralising free radicals caused by sun exposure.

Facial Sunscreen Types

When it comes to active ingredients and UV protection, there are two types of sunscreens:

1. Mineral Based Sunscreens

These sunscreens contain titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. They help deflect UV rays away from the skin. They offer immediate protection and are less likely to irritate sensitive skin. The drawback is that they can leave a thick white cast. The Pink Foundry’s Dewy Hydrating Hybrid Sunscreen is among the best sunscreens for the face. It offers protection from broad-spectrum UVA and UVB rays.

2. Chemical Based Sunscreens

These sunscreens absorb UV rays before they penetrate the skin. They tend to feel lighter and blend in easily without a white cast. However, these sunscreens can irritate sensitive skin. They also require a considerable time (15 – 20 minutes) after application to become fully effective.

Facial Sunscreen vs. Body Sunscreen

You can use a body sunscreen on your face if you want, but facial skin is more sensitive and prone to irritation. Facial sunscreens are specifically formulated with ingredients that feel light. They absorb quickly without clogging the facial skin pores and provide a smooth and shine-free finish under makeup.

On the other hand, body sunscreens tend to be thicker and more difficult to bind to the skin. They are also relatively cheaper compared to facial sunscreens. So, if you don’t have sensitive facial skin, using body sunscreen on the face will not cause any major problems.

How to Apply Sunscreen on Your Face

Apply sunscreen to clean and dry skin at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure. Follow this routine even on cloudy days. There is no general rule of thumb, but try covering all exposed areas like the forehead, ears, and neck with sunscreen. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly until there is no visible cream on the surface of your skin.

During outdoor visits, one can set a daily phone alarm to reapply sunscreen every two hours. This is because the protection can wear off over time. Also, try reapplying the sunscreen after sweating heavily and swimming or towelling off vigorously.

Conclusion

It is better not to take chances with your facial skin. Repeatedly skipping sun protection can be risky. An ounce of timely prevention can outweigh a pound of cure for sun damage. Investing in a high-quality, broad-spectrum SPF sunscreen tailored for your face can help you maintain clear and youthful glowing skin.
