How To Get Rid of Sugar Ants in Your Home

Ants are one of the most common household pests in the states. These six-legged unwanted roommates can arrive by the hundreds to take all of your favorite foods from right under your nose.

If you’re trying to get rid of sugar ants, you know how hard it can be. When you kill one, ten more seem to take its place!

We’re here with some advice that can keep your home ant-free. Read on to learn more.

Wipe Down Counters and Floors Often

When you’ve finished cooking a meal or getting a snack, do you wipe down your counters and floors right away? If you’re like most people, the answer is no. You may clean as you go to some extent, but small messes will stick around until you’re finished eating.

Most of the time, this is fine. When you have sugar ants in your home, however, it’s best to stay on top of cleaning.

Even small spills can attract ants. You may not see the spills, but the ants will find them. Wipe them up before they have a chance.

It’s a good idea to mop your kitchen floors at least once per day if you have a frustrating ant infestation. This can be a lot of work, but don’t worry, it’s temporary. You just want to get rid of any hint of food on your floors and any trails the ants may have left behind.

Bonus tip: you may be able to use diluted vinegar to get rid of scents. Keep your windows open after you clean with vinegar to air out your kitchen and get rid of the vinegar smell. It should dissipate quickly!

Cover Garbage Cans

You might think that your kitchen is spotless, so why are there still ants lurking around? The problem might be lurking in your garbage can.

Ants have no problem dumpster diving for food. As a matter of fact, they’re more likely to find edible treats in there, like stale sweets and fruit rinds. You don’t think of those things as food, but for an ant, that’s an entire feast.

In a perfect world, you’d be able to throw out your garbage every day, but this is wasteful. Instead, either keep your garbage bin outside or cover it tightly so it’s more difficult for ants to get in.

Clean Your Sink

Another common place where sugar ants can find food in your home is your sink. For complete sugar ant eradication, keep it clean.

Rinse it after every time you wash the dishes or put anything down the garbage disposal. You can pour a mix of water and bleach down the drain to get rid of anything lurking within it.

It may also help to our a pot of boiling water down the drain several times per week.

Ants don’t like sinks as much as drain flies do, but they will do anything for scraps of food.

Secure Your Food

We’ve discussed spills and trash, but what about the food that’s in your pantry? That’s the biggest attractor of sugar ants!

Have you ever poured a bowl of cereal just to see ants crawling through? What about opening your sugar bowl to see an ant eating lunch? If this is the case, it’s time for you to make a change.

Put everything that may attract ants into sealed containers. Glass, metal, and plastic containers with secure lids will prevent ants from getting inside and snacking on your foods.

Anything that’s in a non-resealable container in the pantry is potential ant food.

If you have fruit out, it may also benefit you to keep it in the refrigerator, even if you’re waiting for it to ripen. Again, this is a temporary arrangement.

Use Bait and Traps

So you’ve done your part with prevention, but what if those ants keep coming in?

You’re going to have to use bait and traps to kill them and stop them from coming in long-term. You have plenty of options.

Storebought bait traps are most people’s best choice, but avoid putting them anywhere that children or pets can access. They can be toxic.

These traps will attract the ants and influence them to bring the poisonous contents back to their home colonies. This should start killing all of the ants, so they don’t return to your home.

You can also use diatomaceous earth. It’s a soft type of rock that’s irritating to the lungs and mucous membranes. Scatter it around the areas you think ants are coming from, and they should stop showing up.

Used coffee grounds may also be effective, and they’re low-cost. Either scatter them or put a bowl of the grounds anywhere you’ve been noticing ants.

Consider Hiring Pest Control Services

If all of your efforts have been in vain, it might be time to hire a pest control professional.

A good pest control worker will be able to get rid of your infestation and hopefully destroy the ants at the source. They can also give you advice on how to prevent future infestations.

They work quickly, so you don’t have to spend weeks locking up your food.

That’s How You Get Rid of Sugar Ants

Trying to get rid of sugar ants is a hassle, but it can be done! Most of the time, these ants only stick around in the warmer months, so you don’t have to spend all year protecting your home against those six-legged invaders.

When in doubt, hire a pro to help.
