Everything You Must Know About Carrom Rules

Carrom is a popular modern indoor game. It’s not just played in bars but also in other public and private places, such as schools and offices. There are several carrom rules to this game that you should be familiar with before diving in!

Important things to know about

1) The Carrom board is divided into four quadrants for the two players to use. It is a combined total of 32 squares on the board; 16 red and 16 green (different colours are used so each player can tell them apart).

2) The two players will use four discs to hit the pieces towards the goal area (same as the quadrant you are about to shoot).

3) The eight smaller discs are called strikers. Players can use their strikers to defend the red or green goal against enemy hits. They can also be used to hit any other disc on the board.

4) A player can only make a shot if they have their pieces inside an area exclusively theirs, but they must be facing forward (not sideways or backwards).

5) If a player has a juggler or striker in their target quadrant and cannot be defended, the disc will have to be hit out of the quadrant.

6) To shoot, both players must be at least one square away from their own goal.

7) The shooter can only move one square forward (left or right), back (away from their own goal), or diagonal (away from the centre of the board). They cannot move diagonally towards the other goal.

8) The shot pieces must hit the board’s centre to be considered good.

9) If a disc lands on top of any other disc, it is considered dead and cannot be used by either player.

10) A disc can only be moved if the piece that landed on top of it is dead. It cannot be moved if life has been made (discs stacked together).

11) One piece can protect two squares from shooting at one of them.

12) If any disc is hit that you are protecting, the striker must be used to defend the other square first.

13) A player cannot use their striker to shoot beyond the board’s centre.

14) There are a total of 32 slots on the board. Only 21 spaces are used for shots.

15) When a player is ready to shoot, they have to announce it by saying “Shot!”. Then it is the other player’s turn.

16) The shooter can shoot whatever piece they want, so long as it hits the centre of their quadrant.

17) A player can only make a shot if they have their pieces inside an area exclusively theirs, but they must be facing forward (not sideways or backwards).

18) If a player has a juggler or striker in their target quadrant and cannot be defended, the disc will have to be hit out of the quadrant.

19) If a player has a juggler or striker in their target quadrant and neither can be defended, then the disc will have to be hit out of the quadrant.

20) There are a total of 32 slots on the board. Only 21 spaces are used for shots.

21) When a player is ready to shoot, they have to announce it by saying “Shot!”. Then it is the other players’ turn again.
