Most Underrated Contenders For The Kentucky Derby 2022

As the most exciting horse racing of the year approaches and the qualifying round nearly finishes, it is time to meet the contenders of this year’s Kentucky Derby race. The 2022 Kentucky Derby will take place on May 7 at Churchill Downs.

Since we are talking about one of the most popular races on the horse racing calendar, people have already started predicting which horse will win this year’s Kentucky Derby trophy. However, with the prep races still finishing up, we can spot some major changes in the top-favorites list in terms of odds.

However, the favorites don’t always win the Derby. In fact, there were plenty of times in history when an underrated horse claimed the win on the Derby day.

That’s why in today’s article we decided to highlight who are the 2022 Kentucky Derby contenders that everyone might be sleeping on.

In Due Time

This year’s Kentucky Derby will be highlighted by Kelly Breen’s colt that might get a chance for entering the competition with a second-place finish in the Fountain of Youth race. Even though the appearance at the Kentucky Derby is still uncertain, In Due Time might be a great underrated horse entering the competition.

His last chance for reaching the Kentucky Derby will be the Lexington (G3) race at Keeneland.

Crown Pride

Here we have a Japan-bred colt that became eligible for the Kentucky Derby after an impressive win in the UAE Derby. He managed to get 2-for-2 as a juvenile in Japan and finished six in the only other race this year.

With that said, Crown Pride has a good chance of entering the Kentucky Derby, and even though it is considered an underdog at the moment with odds of 50-1, it is worth considering.

Morello

Morello is an Asmussen colt that changes everyone’s mind after his incredible performance in the Withers (G3) and his own personal record of 3-for-3. Even though the buzz quickly faded after a sixth place on the Wood Memorial when he entered as a favorite, most bettors would agree that you cannot sign him off just yet.

Cyberknife

Here we have a Gun Runner colt that managed to return after an unsuccessful run at the Lecomte finishing in sixth place. Cyberknife has later won the Fair Grounds, and an incredible win at the Arkansas Derby (G1) as well as the Barber Road.

Cyberknife is one of the underrated horses that we might see at the Kentucky Derby with odds of 22-1 making it a good bet.

Simplification

Simplification is trained by Antonio Sano and owned by Tami Bobo. He managed to find his way to the Kentucky Derby after a dominating win in the Fountain of Youth (G2) and finished third place in the Florida Derby (G1).

This is Sano’s second appearance at the Kentucky Derby as a trainer, after finishing seventh with Gunnerva in the 2017 Derby.

Charge It

Charge It is a Tapit colt that is trained by Pletcher. Most people got interested in Charge It after he broke his maiden by 8 ½ lengths in February after a small loss to Volcanic in his debut. Charge It is a horse with great potential and with a chance at the Kentucky Derby, everything is possible.

Summer Is Tomorrow

Here we have another underrated horse that might get an incredible run on the Derby Day. After finishing second in the UAE Derby, trainer Bhupat Seemar said that he would consider participating in the Kentucky Derby although the colt had not been nominated for the Triple Crown.

However, he is nominated now and has managed to get a spot in the gate. Summer Is Tomorrow might surprise us with an incredible run on May 7.

Tiz The Bomb

Lastly, we have another underrated horse that acts as a second possibility for McPeek for a win, after finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. After an unsuccessful start to the year finishing seventh in the Holy Bull race, he managed to win the John Battaglia Memorial and Jeff Ruby (G3) at Turfway.
