A Parents Guide on Choosing the Right Sterilizer for Your Baby Products

There are a myriad of baby products that parents need to use when their bundle of joy finally arrives. However, since babies have a weak immune system, each item that goes in their mouth must be properly sterilized to remove any bacteria or germs.

Therefore, sterilization is a critical and regular routine that should be followed. However, new parents might struggle with the process and how to find the right sterilizer. If you are the same, then keep reading this guide.2

Here, we highlight why a sterilizer is so important and what tips first-time parents must follow to choose a reliable and high-quality one for their little one.

Why Do You Need a Sterilizer?

Babies have an extremely delicate immune system making them susceptible to diseases and illnesses when exposed to bacteria or germs. When a feeding bottle that has not been properly cleaned is used to feed the baby, the risk of such bacteria developing increases. Unfortunately, milk that is warm or has been sitting for a while becomes a breeding ground for bacteria.

However, washing such bottles thoroughly with water and soap is not enough to remove bacteria, fungi, and germs. This is regardless of whether you bottle feed, breastfeed, or provide your baby with formula or expressed milk.

Sterilizing raises the temperature to kill any bacteria on baby products. This can also be done using hot steam, depending on the style and type of sterilizer. Moreover, it is recommended that parents sterilize baby milk bottles, including their teats and nipples, and also sterilize feeding products, such as manual or portable breast pumps.

How to Choose the Right Sterilizer

There are various kinds of sterilizers or sterilizing methods. They include the following:

Boiling the Baby Products

Parents can choose to simply boil the baby products in water in a pot for five minutes. Then, they can put the products on the drying rack to dry. This is a simple and inexpensive approach to sterilizing.

However, it is not the best in the long run since it degrades the products’ quality by making the teats swollen and possibly damaging them. It’s also quite time-consuming and tedious. Another reason this approach is tedious is that you will need to supervise the products in the pot because they need to be submerged in the water. If the products are simply floating in the water, they will not sterilize or be thoroughly cleaned.

Steam Bags

Another cost-effective sterilization option is steam bags that you put in the microwave. You must put all of the baby products in the bag. For example, if you have a feeding bottle from Pigeon, you must put the pigeon bottle teats and pigeon bottle cap in the bag and then pop the bag in the microwave.

The downside to this approach is that it can be dangerous to use. Once you are done steaming and opening the bag, the steam can potentially burn your hands. Moreover, these bags can only be used for a limited time before they wear out.

Machine Sterilizers

There are tons of different types of sterilizers. These are often the popular choice for parents because they are not time-consuming or tedious and are comparatively safer. These automatically sterilize the products with minimal effort. Here are the different types of sterilizers:

1.     Microwave Sterilizers

This is a popular option for parents. All you need to do is pour some water, put the baby products in the sterilizer, and place it in the microwave for ten minutes. It is a quick method, but you must ensure that the sterilizer can fit in your microwave.

2.     UV Sterilizers

They are quick and easy to use an effective, and convenient option for parents who want a natural, chemical-free way to sterilize their baby’s items. UV sterilization uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and other microorganisms but may not be as effective in killing all types of bacteria and virus as other sterilization methods, such as steam or chemical sterilization. However, there are limitation to coverage and items need to arrange in a specific way for the UV light to be effective and may be more expensive than other sterilizers.

3.     Steam Sterilizer

This is one of the easiest and most popular bottle sterilizers on the market. They use steam to sterilize the products by killing the bacteria and microorganism and can usually sterilize multiple items at once. They are easy to use, efficient, and effective. Pigeon steam sterilizer  is one of the most widely used since it is portable, easy to use,  and automatically switches off on its own. Items can be kept sterile for 24hrs without removing lid after sterilizing. You can find Pigeon baby products in Singapore online or at all renowned baby product stores.
