3 Simple Steps to Take Before Calling a Locksmith

Being locked out of your car or home is one of the worst feelings, isn’t it? There is so much embarrassment, confusion, and anxiousness. What’s even worse is if you have a baby or animal tapped inside!

Rather than beating yourself up over it, know that it happens to the best of us. If you happen to find yourself in this situation, do you know the correct course of action to take? Before calling a locksmith, is there anything you can do?

Of course, there is! That’s why we came up with this shortlist. Read it below to discover how to handle this experience.

1. Remain Calm

If you happen to find yourself locked out of your car or home, what you don’t want to do is freak out. Often this frustrating situation can cloud your judgment, causing you to behave irrationally. Take a few deep breaths and remain calm before you think about calling a locksmith.

There may be a way you’re not aware of initially to get you back in. It is also not a rare occurrence for a locksmith to show up when the person wasn’t locked out at all. Take a lap around the car or home and see if there aren’t any windows or doors you can take advantage of.

2. Lubricate the Lock

With so many moving parts to a lock, they often times will need lubrication. This ensures that all of the mechanisms are working properly and reduces wear as well. If the key isn’t going in or turning properly, try any non-oil-based lubrication (Graphite, Exyglide, Tri-Flow).

If all you have is something like WD-40, use it. While it is oil-based and may leave a residue, all you need is for it to do the trick, right? Inside the keyhole, spray a small amount of lubrication and move the key.

3. Try Both Keys Simultaneously

If you have an entrance knob set with a push button on the inside and a deadlatch above, you can attempt this trick. With two keys, put both in each lock at the same time. If you only have one key, you can put your foot at the bottom of the door and apply some pressure while turning the key.

The door may open if everything goes accordingly. Continue to apply pressure and remove the key and turn it in the deadlatch. When hiring a locksmith like Advanced Locksmith Inc., they will let you know the problem on hand, whether it’s a badly cut key or having the lock re-keyed.

Calling a Locksmith Will Put Your Mind at Ease

With that said, calling a locksmith is the right course of action to take. You don’t want to make matters worse for yourself, do you? If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could further damage your vehicle, home, or yourself.

Do yourself a favor and make your life easier and contact locksmith services if you’re in need.
